shop dropping and other guerilla art

February 3, 2008

Shop Dropping as an art

shopdropping 1 to covertly place merchandise on display in a store. A form of culture jamming. s to reverse shoplift, droplift.

shop dropping is a (legal) way for artists, musicians, to hijack the mass distribution systems of companies to self-promote. because these new items dropped into the stores often do not have barcodes, customers and employees are often left confused. sometimes, they are sold anyways, and the consumer takes home a product they otherwise would not have exposure to!

December 31, 2007

while the star has been praising the refined, understated, and contemporary “toronto style” that has developed recently, kramer design associates has been working hard on reshaping the city in its own brand of brash, gaudy, and over-the-top pomposity.

ads found only in canada

December 14, 2007

I often wonder how different Canada and the States are. I’m always glad when I encounter ads like this that would be rare in America.

Bay and College Streets, Billboard Ads

Southeast corner of Bay and College Streets, Toronto

The billboard on the left shows a message from the Citizen’s Coalition on Health Care telling us to hold the government up to greater scrutiny in its handling of our health-care system. The billboard on the right: Stop the corporate takeover of local childcare, from the Catholic teachers association.

Pier 27 Condo Ad

November 13, 2007

This video is so compelling that, to borrow one of my professor’s phrases, it’s weeping quality. If I didn’t know that this is just one of the many Toronto developments messing up the city’s plans for a great waterfront, I’d be sold within the first 5 seconds.

I’m speechless. Good job, Architects Alliance.

toronto promotional videos

October 27, 2007

spacing.ca held a contest for video ads for toronto. one of my favourites tells toronto like it is, without the flashy corporate-tized videos and music, and perfect shots of the city that make it look like any other city in the world.

colour. like no other

October 7, 2007

Director: Frank Budgen

The Sony Bravia ads capture a moment in time. They film something that is out of this world, almost like a form of art, put in a public setting: claymation bunnies in New York, paint fireworks in Glasgow, bouncy balls in San Francisco! They inspire because of the sheer amount of effort required: the claymation took 40 animators 3 weeks to create the 100,000 still images. Or they inspire because of the simplicity of idea: the colours produced by exploding paint fireworks. These ads are a form of art for the masses, financed by a corporation that controls so much of our lives today.

world’s largest video wall

September 20, 2007

The 120 foot long video wall in Gehry’s InterActiveCorps IAC building provides an immersive experience that feels and looks out of this world. The high-resolution screen keeps the images crisp, making the entire lobby feel like a set of one long commercial.
